What Types of Questions are Asked During a Life Insurance Medical Exam?


  • Your medical history, - including any medical conditions you have, hospitalizations, medications, or procedures you have had.
  • You will be asked a series of probing questions to ensure that you did not forget or fail to mention pertinent information and to give you the opportunity to reveal your full history.
  • Your family's medical history, such as a history of cancer or genetic disorders .
  • The name, phone number, and address of your primary doctor as well as any other doctors who you have seen in the past few years for special consults or medical situations. Retain all their contact details.
  • Lifestyle habits - negative habits such as alcohol consumption, smoking, recreational drug use, and positive habits such as exercise and diet.
  • How much life insurance you are interested in purchasing.
  • If you suffer from any mood disorders and conditions like depression or anxiety, and if you have been hospitalized for any of the ailments you say that you have had.

Failing to be honest in answering these questions could result in your policy getting cancelled.


Which Procedures to Expect During an Insurance Medical Exam?

  • Your weight and height and weight will be noted.
  • Your blood pressure and pulse will be taken.
  • Blood work will be done to check for things such as glucose, protein, and cholesterol, including LDL, HDL, and triglycerides (poor levels indicate potential heart disease), and diseases such as HIV and AIDS.
  • A urine sample will be required for analysis of things such as protein, glucose levels, creatinine, and for traces of drugs such as cocaine.

After undergoing the medical exam, your insurance company will review the results to determine if you are insurable and calculate the premium they will charge you.
